Fall Protection on Residential Roofs
Falls are the leading cause of fatalities in construction. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502 requires fall protection on all residential roofing work 6 feet or more above a lower level.
Three Approved Protection Methods
Guardrail system: 42-inch top rail, 21-inch mid-rail, toe board. Practical on flat or very low-pitch roofs.
Safety net system: Must extend 8 feet beyond the work area edge. Rarely practical for residential but common on multi-family framing.
Personal fall arrest system (PFAS): Harness, lanyard, and anchor point rated for 5,000 lbs per person. Most common for residential steep-slope work.
Steep-Slope Trigger: 4:12 Pitch
For pitches of 4:12 or greater, a roof bracket (staging) or PFAS is required. Roof jacks and planks are the minimum; a full harness is best practice above 8:12.
Anchor Point Requirements
- Minimum 5,000 lbs static load capacity per anchor
- Ridge anchors must be installed to a structural member (ridge board, not just sheathing)
- Inspect anchors before each use; replace if bent, cracked, or corroded
Toolbox Talk Checklist
- Inspect harness D-ring, straps, and hardware before climbing
- Set anchor before stepping onto the slope
- Keep rope/lanyard clear of feet
- Reposition anchor when moving more than 25 feet laterally
- Two hands for climbing; do not carry tools up the ladder
