Pipe Wrench vs. Channel-Lock Pliers: The Right Tool for Every Plumbing Job
The pipe wrench and the channel-lock (tongue-and-groove) pliers are two of the most-used hand tools in plumbing. Using the wrong one damages fittings, strips threads, and adds re-work to every job.
Pipe Wrench
A pipe wrench is designed specifically for round, threaded iron or steel pipe. Its serrated, hardened jaws grip tighter as you apply torque -- the more you turn, the harder it bites.
Best for:
- Black iron and galvanized steel pipe (threaded connections)
- Removing stubborn, corroded threaded fittings
- Making up (tightening) NPT (National Pipe Taper) threaded connections
- Gas line work where torque is required
Not for:
- Chrome-plated fixtures, supply lines, or drain fittings -- the serrated jaws will scar the finish
- Compression fittings or PVC/CPVC fittings
- PEX fittings (plastic corrodes faster under serrated jaws)
Size selection:
- 14-inch wrench: standard residential work (1/2 to 1-inch pipe)
- 18-inch wrench: 1 to 1-1/2-inch pipe; general commercial rough-in
- 24-inch wrench: 2-inch pipe and stubborn large fittings
- 36-inch wrench: industrial work, 3-inch and larger black iron
Always use two wrenches on threaded joints: one wrench holds the fitting still (backup wrench), one turns the pipe. Running a wrench without a backup stresses the joint in both directions.
Channel-Lock (Tongue-and-Groove) Pliers
Channel-locks (Channellock brand is the most common, hence the name) are multi-position slip-joint pliers with long handles for leverage. They are a general-purpose tool and can grip round, hex, and square shapes.
Best for:
- Tightening and removing slip-joint nuts (P-traps, pop-up assemblies, supply stops)
- PVC DWV fittings where finger-tight is close but not enough
- Compression fitting nuts on copper supply lines
- Grabbing and holding miscellaneous shapes
Not for:
- Making up threaded iron pipe -- you will not get enough torque without marring the fitting
- Torquing flare fittings -- you can overtighten and crack the flare
Jaw size matters: Channellock 430 (10-inch) handles most residential supply/drain work. Channellock 460 (12-inch) adds reach for larger nuts and awkward angles. The 440 (12-inch with long nose) is useful for reaching deep into cabinets.
Specialty Tools
- Basin wrench: Reaches up into tight spaces under sinks to remove and tighten faucet mounting nuts. Not replaceable by a channel-lock in a 4-inch cabinet clearance.
- Strap wrench: Grips polished or chrome-plated surfaces without marring. Essential for chrome shower arms and polished drain covers.
- Locking pliers (Vise-Grips): For broken-off nipples and situations where you need to hold indefinitely. Destructive on the workpiece -- use only when you do not care about the finish.
Common Mistakes
- Using a pipe wrench on chrome: The serrated jaw is designed to mar the workpiece to grip better. On chrome, that is permanent damage.
- Running a wrench without a backup: Always counter-torque on threaded fittings to prevent stressing the joint at the wall.
- Overtightening PVC with a pipe wrench: PVC threaded fittings crack under the leverage of a pipe wrench. Use hand-tight plus 1-2 turns with channel-locks, or use teflon tape correctly to get a seal before over-torquing.
