VOC Exposure and Ventilation for Interior Painting
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in paint solvents and thinners evaporate into the air as paint dries. In enclosed spaces, concentrations can reach levels that cause dizziness, headaches, and long-term liver damage.
OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (8-Hour TWA)

Acrylic latex paints in finished rooms typically emit ethanol and propylene glycol at concentrations well below OSHA PELs with normal window ventilation. Oil-based paints and lacquers require active mechanical ventilation.
Minimum Ventilation for Oil-Based Work
For oil-based paint or lacquer in a closed room:
- Minimum 10 air changes per hour (ACH)
- Example: 12 x 14 x 9 ft room = 1,512 cu ft. 10 ACH = 252 CFM minimum exhaust.
- Set up cross-ventilation: fresh air in on one side, exhaust fan on the opposite wall or window.
Practical Approach
- Use zero-VOC latex whenever possible for occupied spaces.
- For oil-based work, open all windows and add a 200-300 CFM box fan in one window facing out.
- Never use solvent-based products in a space with an open pilot light or spark sources.
- Post CO monitors: some solvents produce CO as a combustion byproduct if ventilation is insufficient.
PPE Minimum
- Half-face respirator with organic vapor cartridges (P100/OV) for oil-based work in enclosed spaces
- Safety glasses when spraying
- Nitrile gloves when cleaning brushes with mineral spirits
