Electrical Safety When Working on HVAC Systems

Residential air conditioning systems operate on 240V split-phase circuits that can deliver lethal current. These practices are non-negotiable before opening any air handler or condenser cabinet.

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Procedure

  1. Identify all energy sources: main breaker at panel, disconnect at condenser, fused disconnect at air handler.
  2. Notify the homeowner you are de-energizing the system.
  3. Open all disconnects and lock with a personal lockout hasp. If the disconnect box has no provision for a lock, apply a lockout clip and hang a danger tag.
  4. Verify with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wiring.

Capacitor Discharge

Run capacitors and start capacitors can hold 300-600V DC even after the breaker is off, and they retain that charge for minutes to hours.

Before touching any capacitor:

  • Discharge using a 20,000-ohm, 5-watt resistor across the terminals.
  • Do not use a screwdriver; the arc will damage the capacitor and can startle you into a fall.
  • Verify discharge with a DC voltmeter set to 600V.

Refrigerant Line Safety

  • Suction lines can reach -20°F: wear insulated gloves to prevent cold burns.
  • High-side lines can reach 150-180°F under operation: verify temperature before contact.

PPE Minimum Standard

  • Arc-rated gloves (Class 00 minimum for 240V)
  • Safety glasses when cutting or brazing lines
  • Insulated tools when probing live circuits (NFPA 70E requires this for any exposed energized work)
