Flooring Adhesive Safety: What Every Installer Needs to Know
Flooring adhesives range from low-hazard (pressure-sensitive acrylic) to serious respiratory hazards (solvent-based contact cement and SBR adhesives). Every installer needs to understand what they're working with before opening a container.
Know Your Adhesive Type
Water-based (acrylic, latex): Low VOC. Adequate ventilation is good practice; respirator typically not required for short work. Examples: most LVT adhesives, cork adhesives.
Pressure-sensitive: Similar to water-based. Low odor, water cleanup.
Epoxy (two-part): Low solvent content but resin and hardener are skin and eye sensitizers. Nitrile gloves and safety glasses required.
Solvent-based contact cement: HIGH hazard. Contains n-hexane, toluene, or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Flammable. Requires serious ventilation and a respirator. Examples: many hardwood adhesives, rubber adhesives.
SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber): Used under hardwood and some LVP. Moderate hazard. Water cleanup but some solvent content.
Ventilation Requirements
OSHA PEL for common flooring solvents:

Practical rule: If you can smell it, you are being exposed. In an enclosed space (basement, small bathroom), that smell can reach IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health) levels quickly.
Minimum ventilation for any solvent adhesive:
- Open all windows and doors
- Add a box fan blowing OUT in at least one opening (exhausting fumes outward)
- Do not use solvent adhesive in a basement with no windows
For confined spaces, a supplied-air respirator or SCBA is required, not a half-face cartridge respirator.

Latex or vinyl gloves are NOT adequate for solvent-based adhesives. Solvents penetrate latex in under a minute. Use 8-mil nitrile or thicker.
Fire Hazard
Solvent-based adhesives have low flash points (some below 0 degrees F). In an enclosed space:
- No open flames within 50 feet
- No spark-producing tools (angle grinders, nail guns that can spark)
- Keep adhesive containers closed when not actively applying
- Bond-off (allow to flash off) before using any ignition source in the space
First Aid
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Solvent exposure to large skin areas: get to fresh air and call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US).
Eye contact: Flush with water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses. Seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air immediately. If symptoms persist (dizziness, headache, nausea), seek medical evaluation. Do not leave an exposed person alone.
Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Call Poison Control immediately.
Always have the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) accessible on the jobsite. You are legally required to under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200).
